Dry Skin Q&A with Pharmacist Fred Cheng

By Frederick Cheng (RPh), and Christine Cheng (RPh)

Q: What can I do to get rid of my perpetually dry skin?

A: First of all, see your doctor to eliminate any pathological causes.  Stay hydrated with 2L of water intake daily.  Decrease the frequency and length of showers/baths.  Be sure to use a mild, natural cleanser, as well as moisturize immediately with hypo-allergenic products such as those by Viva Health which is proudly made in small batches right here in Richmond from all-natural ingredients.  Their Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum is amazing at sealing in moisture, especially in problem areas, and can help reduce/minimize wrinkles.  Riversol, and Di Morelli are two tried and trusted lines formulated by Vancouver-based physicians that are also worth considering.  Remember: creams and ointments are superior to lotions.  Calendula Complex Cream, a homeopathic option in a calendula cream base, can be very soothing for dry, irritated areas, and is safe to use even in babies, and can be used all over.  Bag Balm is a great product for sealing in precious moisture.  A good collagen and omega fatty-acid can create elasticity in your skin, as well as keep it soft and supple.  Many find high-quality probiotics useful for water/electrolyte-balance.  Come see Fred and his integrative pharmacists at Pharmasave Steveston Village to establish a regimen effective at re-nourishing your dry skin.
